Spring Cleaning with a Higher Purpose

Yesterday was report-writing day for Lou. She has a rough draft of a geography report due on Monday. It's a big project requiring concentrated time at the table. After I helped her color-code her notes to match her travel itinerary/outline, I quietly stepped away to let her writing become her own.

While it was clear I could (and should) step away, it was also clear that she needed my presence. So, I stepped back and began to clean the kitchen.

And I cleaned, and I cleaned, and I cleaned.

All the corners of my kitchen.

As I quietly scrubbed the cupboards, Lou would pipe up with a little comment or question about what she was writing. I would reply, or join in a little brainstorm, and then we'd both get back to our work.

It was a companionable time. And, as I scrubbed, I thought about how similar this was to when the girls were doing the "work of play" when they were younger.

The very best play came when I was busy about the house. My energy provided a bit of security that let them just disappear into their own imaginary worlds. I do miss their Old Fashioned Play.

Even as teens, my form-my presence-my energy, gives them freedom.

It's spring cleaning with a higher purpose!

ps: I also spring-cleaned my blog which now is reorganized and has a whole new look. Click on over and tell me what you think! (and Mom, by this post, I bet you can guess...I submitted my grant!)

Daddy's Girlfriend

It all began with the Best Burger Ever. Nels came across this Pioneer Woman recipe about a year ago, and it truly is the best burger. ever. Then, while hunting for a carbonara recipe, he found Pastor Ryan's. This recipe also became a family favorite and the phrase was born.... "Daddy, is this one of your girlfriend's recipes?"

As a joke, we got him his girlfriend's book for Christmas and now she is in our lives even more. We are currently loving Daddy's girlfriend's pizza crust.

Bon appetit!

Sugaring Season

It may look like deep winter here, but the woods are coming alive.
Nels and Lou tapped 20 trees this year.

The snow is deep enough that snowshoes are definitely needed.

Here's Lou helping to collect.

Here's our little rig. All we had to buy was a stovepipe.
The wood we are burning is all from our land.

We boiled outside for about 6 hours.
On Sunday we all hung out together.
What do you do all day long?
Jack knives help pass the time.

It is fun to make a bow and arrow set.
It worked!

Lots of food to cook on the fire also helps to pass the time
sausages, bread & cheese, s'mores.

Here's the best part of all!

It's amazing to think that these same trees will be providing us with deep green shade in just a few short months.

When the foeman bares his steel

Who says that big kids don't play with pots and pans?

When the foeman bares his steel....

Tarantara! Tarantara!

We uncomfortable feel....

Tarantara!

And we find the wisest thing....

Tarantara! Tarantara!

Nothing like a little Gilbert and Sullivan to get us through a dreary March evening.
