Eating Local on the Weekend

Over the past few months, we have drifted away from having the bulk of our meals be prepared from local foods. This weekend, I proposed to my family that we take a step back toward a more local diet by eating as many local foods as possible on the weekend. We began this step with a lot of food processing on Sunday.

We baked and froze butternut squash.

Stewed and froze tomatoes.

Picked apples--Helen has already processed a bushel into applesauce.

There is absolutely nothing that makes Helen happier then when she is processing food. She says it makes her all cozy inside and reminds her of this picture:

We'll keep you posted on how the move toward being more local on the weekends goes!

I think Helen is exactly right! I love that picture from Big Woods (well, the whole book really).

It must be easy to eat local when you *have* a local, and it contains so many wonderful foods! City dwellers may find this more difficult. But I love the idea of it.

Don't forget the common ground fair this weekend! lots of ideas on living local. Cider press is ready to go for some back yard pressing. We could do it when we haul out the dock

Yay! We just got back from one of the restaurants that we supply produce to, but this one is special b/c they only feature local foods. They made a whole dinner just using our produce tonight and then we got a big applause from all the diners there. Glad you are finding a way to bring all the bounty of the season into your house.
I am in love with cortland apples for making apple sauce this year, they are the best.

We've already canned 3 quarts of applesauce and have a bunch in the fridge- YUM! We'll be doing more this weekend. Question on the squash, does it freeze well? Do you freeze it in chunks or pureed?

I bake our squash, mash it, then freeze it. Tom--I'd love to go to do some cider pressing. Let's find a good weekend. Lisa Anne--congrats on the restaurant feature. What fun. WE have quite few restaurants here who feature local food, but only one who does virtually all.
