High School
Helen just returned from three days at a writers' conference. She joined a group of high school students from around the country for intensive writing workshops, craft sessions, open mics, a contradance, and a jazz concert.
It was held at Champlain College which sits right on Lake Champlain. Gorgeous.
Her mentor was poet Jim Ellefson.
They had over 10 hours of writing workshops.

There were poetry slams led by the Vermont Slam Champion.
There's quite a slam poetry scene in Vermont!
She had a fabulous time. The weekend was made complete when she received an email from the Vermont Young Writers project informing her that one of her poems had been selected for publication this week. It's her 3rd to be published!
One of the best parts of parenting teens is watching them find their passions.
what a wonderful opportunity for her!
What a perfect fit for her education and talents! Is the Iowa Writers Workshop in her future?
Btw, my great great uncle, a Benedictine artist, once painted Lake Champlain. It hangs in my mother's living room and I've always wanted to go there!
Tracy--she is thinking about either Breadloaf or Kenyon next summer. She wants to do Champlain again as well. We shall see. It is getting expensive with 2 girls wanting to do all these special programs in the summer.
That sounds like an awesome workshop and congratulations to your daughter on getting published.
I'm also a teenager. If you're kids are interested, I write an art and inspiration blog at www.projectpaperie.blogspot.com.
I'd be honored if you'd stop by and say hello!
I so agree about watching them find their passion! It can be trying and exhilarating all at the same time. The writers conference sounds ever so wonderful.
